Gastrointestinal (Stomach and Intestinal Disturbances): CAM Therapies for Specific Conditions

  • Gastritis can be successfully treated with herbs. In two studies of gastritis, Chinese herbs showed an ability to significantly improve symptoms. In one study, herbs used in combination with a pharmaceutical drug produced better results than the drug used alone.

  • Gastritis responds to homeopathic treatment. In a 1966 study of the homeopathic remedy Nux vomica, forty-three of seventy-four patients responded positively to homeopathy compared to twenty-seven of seventy-three who received a placebo.

  • Pitta people (Ayurvedic medicine) are more likely to suffer from gastritis. In addition, pitta people are more likely to have liver and gallbladder problems, hyperacidity, peptic ulcers, inflammatory disease, and skin problems.

  • Aloe vera gel has a healing effect upon the stomach and intestines, especially in the treatment of peptic ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Usual use is 100 mg of solid extract taken with at least 8 ounces of liquid, three times per day. There are no reported negative side effects even with indefinite periods of use.
