Eye Disorders: CAM Therapies for Specific
- Acupuncture is used as a treatment for eye
inflammation, according to a survey compiled by the World Health Organization
(WHO). It is occasionally used as a last resort.
- Bilberry, which is known to include a wide number
of powerful antioxidants, has been shown to be effective not only for arthritis
but also for certain disorders of the eyes. Bilberry, or European blueberry,
was used by the Royal Air Force in World War II to improve night vision. There
is no information at present indicating any serious side effects. There is
evidence that 80-160 mg of bilberry three times per day may briefly improve
night vision. Long-term use may mask serious underlying ocular diseases and
should not be used without a complete ocular examination by an ophthalmologist.
